Dinetah Rock Art and Pueblitos
In mid-April, Sue and I visited some of the sites within the extensive “Dinetah” area of northern New Mexico. We were unfamiliar with these sites prior to a few months ago. This is the traditional homeland of the Navahos. Between about 1680 and the 1770’s, the Navaho built over 200 pueblitos, stone structures of various sizes, mostly defensive in nature. We visited two regions: first, Simon Pueblito, just north of the San Juan River, then 3 sites in Crow Canyon, southeast of Bloomfield, NM.
