Upper Grand Gulch Backpack
Steve Earle invited us to do a backpack in Grand Gulch, on Cedar Mesa in Utah. Sue and I have backpacked this area before, but it's been a long time. We love the canyon, and its ruins and rock art. We got together with Steve, Jim, and Susan at the Natural Bridges National Monument visitors center, and did a "warm up" hike there. We camped near Bullet Canyon trailhead, and began the backpack at Kane Gulch the following morning. We had planned to camp near Todie Canyon that night, but arrived there early in the afternoon, so preceded on down to a spot below Split Level Ruin. This part of Grand Gulch has ruins about every 30-40 min of hiking time, so there are lots of stops. The second day we hiked into Bullet Canyon, camping near Jailhouse ruins, and hiked out on the 3rd day. We had plenty of time to see and photograph ruins and rock art. I really felt like I was visiting an old friend!
